Wow

Sometime between 7:00 and 8:30 PM, we lost the top out of our last old maple in the front yard.

The weather service claims we're having winds "from the W (270 degrees) at 25 MPH (22 KT) gusting to 51 MPH (44 KT)" but I'm thinkin' they were gusting higher than that earlier. We saw on TV that the storm itself was moving 73 MPH at just about the time I figure we would have lost the tree.

I have no idea whether the tree is salvagable, but it was damaged several years ago when we had another bout of straight-line winds and the two locusts on the other side of the driveway fell into it. So I'm guessing it's about all she wrote for this poor old tree.

I'm damn glad we took out the big maple in the back yard this fall and trimmed the rest of the trees around it. That was clearly $3000 well spent, because I have no doubt the big maple would be visiting our dining room about now.
